The Issue

Hogwarts Legacy is now available for Deluxe edition users, three days before its general release. Deluxe users will be able to play and beta-test the game before the rest of the players. There have been various reports of the game crashing across multiple platforms such as Reddit and WB forums. This article I will be going through some solutions on solving crashes while playing “Hogwarts Legacy” or not being able to start the game at all. The solutions offered aim to improve the game’s compatibility with the user’s PC. This artile mentions that there could be weird Edge cases with specific hardware causing crashes, but driver updates may fix this or there may be an update to the game.

For now, there are certain things you can try to resolve the crashing.

Random crashes? Fix settings (VRAM)

Change Upscaler & Reflex Low Latency

  1. Click Settings
  2. Select Graphics Options
  3. Click Texture Quality - Which effects VRAM
  4. Set it to Low
  5. Select View Distance Quality
  6. Set it to Low

Game Settings

These two options will improve the compatibility the most.

You can also change Global Quality Preset to Recommended or Low

Changing Window Mode

Under the Options tab change the Window Mode either to:

Changing these options can give you better compatibility.

Upscale Type

If your graphics card is not compatible with Nvidia DLSS Quality try switching to AMD FSR 2

This will give you the same results, but it is far more compatible, which you can use on any PC.

Nvidia Reflex Low Latency

Having Nvidia Reflex Low Latency turned On may cause issues for you.

Under the Display Options - Turn Nvidia Reflex Low Latency - Off.

Select correct GPU

At the very bottom of Display Options you are able to select a GPU, should you have more than 1 GPU installed.

Select the more powerful GPU, that you have installed in your PC, and has a direct connection to the monitor you are trying to play on.

The game is demanding and won’t run well on most PCs, as confirmed by the official Steam page that lists the complete system requirements.

Graphic Drivers Update

Ensure that your graphics drivers are up-to-date, You can download the lastest version by going to the offical websites:

You can also try a clean GPU installation by using DDU to completely remove the old GPU version:

For more information about DDU, please check the DDU Forums

Disable Overclocks

The cause of the game crashing issue is often due to overclocking. Players have fixed this issue by resetting their GPU and CPU to default frequencies. The use of overclocking tools such as MSI Afterburner and Zotac Firestorm, which are popular for overclocking GPUs, is known to cause problems with newer games.

MSI Afterburner

The number of players affected by the game crashes is uncertain, but the issue serves as a reminder that overclocking can be harmful if not done properly. It’s important to note that even if crashes don’t occur, overclocking can still cause problems.

Disable Overlays

Third-party applications can cause problems with the game and make it unresponsive. To resolve these issues, disabling applications like Discord and Windows Game Bar may help.

Steam

Close Other Software

Users have reported that the following software can lead to crashes:

If you are not using of the above mentioned software, Go ahead and uninstall it. If you are using the software, Go ahead and close it.

Verify Game Files On Steam

To verify the integrity of game files on Steam, follow these steps:

  6. Steam will now check the game’s files and verify that they are correct. If any issues are found, Steam will download and replace the missing or corrupted files.

Windows Updates

Lastley, updating Windows improves performance as Microsoft releases new updates with enhancements. The latest example is the release of Windows 11, which includes faster startup times and improved graphics processing for better performance.

This process helps ensure that the game files are complete and not corrupted, which can help resolve issues such as crashes or glitches.

Windows Update

Ultimately, it all comes down to driver compatibility - You can try running the game as Admin which may help improve things. If you are not at fault the best thing to do is to wait for a driver update at least and check the Steam Forums to find out any information from fellow community memebers about what could be causing the issue for you.
