The Issue

Do you want to reset settings for Hogwarts Legacy? Have you changed an option, now the game won’t launch? Don’t worry! It’s simple to change settings for the game - even without launching! This article shows you how.

Open Hogwarts Legacy AppData Folder

1. On your desktop, press Start + R
2. In the run dialogue type %LocalAppData%/Hogwarts Legacy hit Enter
3. Open Saved - Config - Windows No Editor
4. Sort the files by Date. Near the top, open GameUserSettings.ini in a normal text editor.

If you do not see any filed under Local - Click the three dots at the top of the windows file explorer (Windows 11) - Click Options , Under View and Disable Hide Extentions for known file types and make sure Show Hidden Files, Folders and drives are enabled. For Windows 10, you will find it under the View tab.

Edit Hogwarts Legacy Options (without launching)

You will then be about to edit any game settings you may have changed.

• True = On
• False = Off

Make sure that you keep capitalization “True” / “False”

You can scroll through GameUserSettings.ini and customize just about anything, without opening the game. You can even push the setting furhter than allowed by the in-game GUI.

Example: You can edit ResolutionSizeX=2560 and ResolutionSizeY=1440 to change it to 1920x1080 by changing the last numbers, within Resolution Size:

ResolutionSizeX=1920 ResolutionSizeY=1080

You will also need to change LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeX=1920 and LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeY=1080

Reset Hogwarts Legacy Options

1. Rename GameUserSettings.ini to GameUserSettings1.ini
2. Open Hogwarts Legacy.

After lauching the game, the settings will be reset

Delete Hogwarts Legacy Options

1. Right Click GameUserSettings.ini
2. Select Delete

Either otpion has the same outcome, the game will not be able to find GameUserSettings.ini and it will recreate it and all setting will be back to default.

Stop settings resetting / Lock settings

If you would like Steam to not replace the file, simply follow the steps below:

1. Right Click GameUserSettings.ini
2. Select Properties
3. Under the General Tab - Select Read Only
4. Click Apply then Ok

The next time steam tries to override this file or options try to reset in-game it won’t be able to change them in the Settings file.

If you do enable read-only mode and customize your options in-game, when you restart the game your settings will be back to where they were before, in the state that they were locked in. You will need to unlock that file, change your settings then lock it again, should you choose to keep it locked.
