What you’ll need

Fabric loads mods into Minecraft: Java Edition. This guide sets up a Fabric 26.3 server on Windows. The software is free; the hosting PC must stay on while people play.

Fabric supports 26.3 , with Loader 0.19.5 recommended at release. Support was checked on 18 September 2026. Individual mods need their own 26.3-compatible releases, so check your mod list before upgrading an existing world.

Install Java 25

Mojang’s 26.3 metadata specifies Java 25. Install the Windows x64 JDK 25 MSI from Eclipse Temurin , keeping its PATH option enabled.

Is this free?

Yes. The server software is free. Everyone joining needs Minecraft: Java Edition, and the hosting PC must stay on while you play.

This guide sets up the official vanilla Java Edition 26.3 server on Windows. Bedrock clients can’t join it. For this release, you’ll need Java 25, and new servers have the whitelist enabled by default.

Install Java 25

The 26.3 version metadata specifies Java 25. An older Java installation from a 1.21 server won’t run it.

What is Paper?

Paper is free Minecraft Java Edition server software with performance changes and support for Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper plugins. Players join with Java Edition 26.3; they don’t install the server’s plugins.

Checked 18 September 2026: Paper 26.3 is available as an experimental build. The official download page still offers 26.2 by default, and the 26.3 build API labels build 17 ALPHA. Test with a separate world or a copy of your server before upgrading your main world.
